In an internal memo, Sharma stated, “Game Pass has become too expensive for players,” emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of the pricing model to enhance value for consumers.

“Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model isn’t the final one. Player behavior, content economics, and markets vary too much for a single approach to work everywhere,” she elaborated. With this in mind, Sharma is exploring a more flexible pricing structure for Game Pass, potentially introducing a tier that focuses solely on games developed by Microsoft’s own studios. This aligns with her vision of creating a more adaptable service that can better meet the diverse needs of gamers.

Additionally, there are plans to bundle third-party services with Game Pass subscriptions, similar to discussions Sharma had with Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters. These innovations aim to bolster subscription numbers and revenue while enhancing the overall value proposition of Game Pass.

In her efforts to redefine Xbox's identity, Sharma recently scrapped the “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign, which had faced backlash from both internal teams and the gaming community. An unnamed Microsoft spokesperson remarked, “Asha retired ‘This is an Xbox’ because it didn’t feel like Xbox.” This shift indicates her commitment to aligning the brand’s messaging with its core audience.

Sharma has also refocused efforts on Xbox console hardware, instructing engineering teams to prioritize highly requested features. This includes improvements to the Xbox user interface, which has been a long-standing request from fans. The engineering lead, Eden Marie, expressed enthusiasm about the renewed focus on delivering features that enhance user experience, stating, “It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this energized at work.”

Looking ahead, Sharma’s vision entails significant investments in the foundational elements of the Xbox platform, particularly as the next-generation Project Helix console approaches. In her recent communications, she highlighted the need for a cohesive infrastructure that supports quality and speed across various platforms, stating, “It’s clear that our ambitions require deeper investment in the Xbox platform foundations than we’ve made before.”

As Xbox Cloud Gaming continues to evolve, she aims to enhance player interactions and social connectivity across devices to ensure a seamless gaming experience.

One of the challenges Sharma faces is the ongoing debate regarding the inclusion of popular titles like Call of Duty in Game Pass. While there have been rumors about potentially removing the franchise to lower costs, it remains unclear whether existing titles will be affected. Decisions about future Call of Duty games in Game Pass will be pivotal and could reflect underlying strategic shifts within Xbox's operations.
