Apple and Samsung just got beaten to the Wide Fold punch once again

HUAWEI has officially introduced the Pura X Max, a new foldable phone that showcases a wide cover and folding display, positioning itself ahead of Apple and Samsung's anticipated wide fold models.

This latest device builds upon the original Pura X, which was launched last year and garnered attention for its innovative design. With the Pura X Max, HUAWEI aims to take the lead in the foldable phone market as it steps into 2026.

Key Features of the Pura X Max

  • The Pura X Max features a significant upgrade in its design, moving from the clamshell style of its predecessor to a more conventional book-style foldable.
  • It sports a large 5.4-inch outer screen with LTPO technology, capable of reaching a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, and a 7.7-inch inner display with an impressive peak brightness of 3,500 nits.
  • The device is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro chipset, which promises a 25% CPU improvement, a 40% GPU enhancement, and a 70% increase in NPU performance compared to the earlier Kirin 9020.
  • In terms of camera technology, the Pura X Max has a versatile triple rear camera setup, including a 50MP main camera with a variable aperture, a 12.5MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP telephoto shooter.
  • The device also comes equipped with a 5,300mAh battery, supporting both 66W wired and 50W wireless charging.

As a notable advancement, HUAWEI has introduced a flexible rear camera setup that caters to various photographic needs, enhancing the overall user experience. The new Red Maple color sensor allows for more accurate color reproduction, making it a strong contender in the smartphone photography arena.

Comparison with Competitors

While HUAWEI leads the charge with the Pura X Max, Samsung is rumored to be launching the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, which is expected to have similar specifications, including a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch folding panel. The original Pura X had a smaller 3.5-inch outer display and a 6.3-inch folding screen, highlighting the significant improvements made in the Max version.

Operating System and Additional Features

The Pura X Max operates on Harmony OS 6.1, diverging from the traditional Android system. This device also supports the M-Pen 3 Mini stylus, enhancing its usability for productivity tasks. Additionally, it features compatibility with the DJI Osmo Pocket series of action cameras, offering seamless content sharing capabilities.

Durability and Pricing

In terms of durability, the Pura X Max is designed with an IP58/59 rating and a robust ultra-thin glass display, ensuring it can withstand daily wear and tear. The pricing for the Pura X Max starts at 10,999 yuan (approximately $1,613) for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the top-tier model with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage is priced at 13,999 yuan (around $2,053).

With the ongoing global component shortages and rising costs, potential buyers should anticipate higher prices in markets outside of China, should HUAWEI decide to launch the device internationally.

The Pura X Max marks a significant step forward for HUAWEI in the competitive foldable phone market, as it prepares to challenge the established giants like Apple and Samsung.
